Brother bear and touching spirit bear comparison
Second, the actual plot and the themes don’t quite come together at times.

I love this movie, but I am fully aware of how inaccurate and silly it is.įirst off, Pocahontas and John Smith were never in love, as any nine-year-old can tell you. If it sounds like I’m mocking the plot, it’s because I am. There’s a talking tree and metaphors and Pocahontas’ not-husband-to-be gets shot and dies, which totes clears up her indecision about marrying him, and then the Indians try to kill John Smith but Pocahontas saves him because now he paints with ALL the colors of the wind. These scenes are pretty much the crux of the plot, which is essentially the British coming over and taking the land from the American Indians and John Smith kind of assimilating into the tribe and junk. These scenes are embedded in the memory of almost every American child, as they should be. The thing about Pocahontas that everyone remembers is when Pocahontas is teaching John Smith about the way of her people. The plot isn’t incredibly spelled out, I suppose.

The basic outline is this: It’s Jamestown at the beginning of the contact and Pocahontas is a free spirit American Indian who doesn’t want to marry the guy her daddy wants her to marry, this dashing British dude named John Smith steps in and is all, “I’m dashing,” and there we go…we officially have the makings of a cliché Disney movie. If you have seen it, then the odds are good that you’ve seen it enough times to know pretty much every single line. If you haven’t already seen this movie, then you didn’t have a childhood and I’m very sorry that your parents obviously didn’t love you enough. So first and foremost we should focus on plot. I want to break this review up according to plot, representation, soundtrack, and animation style. I guess I should tell you that there’ll be spoilers ahead, but if you didn’t anticipate that already then you’re an idiot and you don’t deserve to be on my blog.

That’s partially why I have always loved the idea of writing this piece comparing the two. Though I love both films, I have always considered Brother Bear to be Disney’s apology for the stereotypes and historical innaccuracies in Pocahontas. To me, they have some very big things in common, the most notable of which is the fact that they both feature Native characters and they both deal with “finding yourself.” These are two films that I love and that I have seen plenty of. My followers don’t know this, but ever since I started this blog I have intended on one day writing a comparison piece between Pocahontas and Brother Bear.
